Hebrews 11:1-2 tells us, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. For by it the elders obtained a good report.”
Then verse 3 continues: “Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.”
Right from the start, Hebrews 11 describes how God Himself uses faith. It takes us back to the first book in the Bible—Genesis: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” But Hebrews 11 gives us insight into how He created it: by His words. Not just our planet, but the worlds were spoken into existence. God used words—faith-filled words.
So, after defining faith in verse 1, by verse 3 the focus shifts to words. Faith and words.
Ephesians 5:1 tells us to be imitators of God. That means we are to live by faith and walk by faith—just like He does. So how does God operate?
In Genesis, we see clearly: God spoke, and it was. He spoke, and it became.
This was not a one-time event. It’s the pattern of how God has always worked, and He expects us to function the same way. It is the way, the eternal way, that He has done things.
Psalm 33:6 says, “By the word of the Lord were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of His mouth.”
Verse 9 adds, “For He spoke, and it was done; he commanded, and it stood fast.”
Isaiah 55:11 continues this truth about the word of the Lord: “So shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; it shall not return to me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”
The Lord’s words are always effective. They carry power. They produce results.
Romans 12 urges us not to conform to this world but to be transformed by the renewing of our minds, so we can figure out what God’s will is—what is good and pleasing to Him. But the ungodly world uses words to express thoughts and feelings. The world does not have a concept of using words to change things. People say, “I feel this,” or “I want you to know this,” using words to convey their feelings or thoughts.
But God doesn't speak just to communicate. When He speaks, He releases faith, power, and Spirit-filled substance that changes what He is speaking to. God says this is what happens when words go out of His mouth: they accomplish something. In Isaiah He said, “My word that goes forth out of My mouth shall not return to me void.”
In Luke, the Word says, “No word from God shall be without power or impossible of fulfillment” (Luke 1:37 God never speaks empty, idle, or vain words. We should be glad He doesn't, because if He said something that He didn't mean, it would still have an effect. That’s how powerful His words are.
We're created in His likeness and image, and He has told us to imitate Him. Yet most people—even many church-going people—don't believe this or operate this way. If we truly believed our words carried power, we would change the way we talk.
Listen to how people talk. If they believed everything they said would come to pass, would they say it? But most people don't believe it, so they say all kinds of careless things.
Popular lingo and “cool talk” are overwhelmingly negative. For example, someone sees a car with nice wheels and says, “That's sick.” Why not say something healthy and positive like “Those are excellent”? Years ago, if something was popular, people would say, “That's bad.” Why call something that's great in so many ways “bad”?
What most of the occupants of this planet don’t recognize is that Satan is the god of this world. Second Corinthians 4:4 says so: “The god of this world has blinded the minds of unbelievers to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel...”
Satan influences people by continually bringing thoughts and phrases to get them to speak death, defeat, confusion, and failure. Just think about phrases used in hundreds of popular songs:
“I’m going out of my mind.”
“You’re driving me crazy.”
“If I lose you, I’ll die.”
“I’m going to die!”
Phrases like this are everywhere, and people say them without a second thought. Why? Because people do not believe that God created everything with His words. They don’t believe He created us in His image to function the same way. They don’t believe their words have an impact on their lives.
However, Scripture teaches otherwise. It's not just everything you say that comes to pass—it's what you believe and say that really makes a difference in your life.
You are a speaking spirit. Your words make a difference. They matter.
So, declare and choose today to put a guard on your mouth and only say what God says! Let your words be filled with faith, not fear. With life, not death. With truth, not trends.
